Women's Lacrosse Tops Johns Hopkins, 15-5

BALTIMORE, MD. - No. 17 Johns Hopkins tallied three goals in the game's first five minutes, but fifth-ranked North Carolina responded with nine unanswered goals, and held the Blue Jays to two goals in the second half en route to a 15-5 victory in women's lacrosse action on Friday evening at Homewood Field. Hopkins fell to 0-1 on the season, while the Tar Heels improved to 2-0 overall.
JHU junior attacker Erin Wellner scored a goal 1:09 into the contest. Junior attacker Jamie Larrimore tallied next, followed by freshman midfielder Heidi Pearce to give the Blue Jays a quick 3-0 lead with 24:56 remaining in the first half. UNC regrouped, scoring nine straight goals before the end of the first stanza to stake a 9-3 halftime advantage. Tar Heel junior attacker Kellie Thompson (Grasonville, MD/St. Mary's) notched three goals during the run, while senior attacker Erin McInnes (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park) and senior midfielder Amy Havrilla connected for two goals each.
Thompson opened the scoring in the second half with a goal at 29:03 to boost the UNC advantage to 10-3. Hopkins sophomore attacker Meghan Burnett made it 10-4 with her marker at 24:05 off an assist from Larrimore. UNC's Havrilla netted two consecutive goals and Thompson recorded her fifth of the night to push the Tar Heel lead to 13-4. Havrilla tallied again, and assisted on freshman Brooke Young's (West Chester, PA/B. Reed Henderson) marker for UNC's 15-4 advantage. Larrimore connected at the 4:19 mark for the final 15-5 score. Larrimore's second goal for Johns Hopkins pushed her career total to 109, tying her for 10th all-time on JHU's goals scoring list.
North Carolina outshot Johns Hopkins, 31-13, and notched seven free position shots compared to JHU's one. Ground balls were even at 13 apiece. UNC held a 12-10 draw control advantage. JHU sophomore goalkeeper Jen McDonald allowed 15 goals and saved 14 shots. Tar Heel junior Melissa Coyne (Baltimore, MD/Towson) made seven saves and allowed four goals, while reserve freshman goalie Katelyn Hoffman (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) allowed one goal for UNC.
Johns Hopkins hosts #4 Duke on Sunday. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m. The Tar Heels visit top-ranked Maryland Sunday at 1 p.m.
