Tar Heels Fall to Gators in Women's Tennis

Gainesville, Fla. ------ Fourth-ranked Florida scored a 7-0 victory over No. 16 North Carolina in women's tennis action Tuesday evening in Gainesville. Carolina falls to 8-2 on the season, while Florida improved to 8-0 in dual competition. The match was clinched at the No. 5 singles when Julia Scaringe defeated Kendrick Bunn, 6-2, 6-3, giving the Gators their fourth overall point of the match.
Florida won the doubles point, winning 8-0 in the No. 3 position and 8-3 in the No. 2 position. At No. 1 doubles, Carolina fought to the end, but came up short in the tiebreaker, losing 9-8 (7-4).
In the best match of the day at No. 1 singles, 12th-ranked Marlene Mejia of UNC fell to No. 27 Whitney Laiho, 2-6, 7-6 (2), 2-6. Kate Pinchbeck pushed Florida's Lindsay Dawaf to a third set before falling, 2-6, 7-5, 2-6.
The Tar Heels next match is Thursday at South Florida at 2:30 p.m.
