Men's Tennis Defeats Campbell 6-1

Chapel Hill, NC - The North Carolina men's tennis team has started the 2001 season on the right track. After downing the Campbell Camel's 6-1, the Heels have run their season record to 2-0.
The Heels began their victory by dominating all three doubles matches. Number one duo Nicholas Monroe and Marcio Petrone defeated Campbell's team of Mardbrink/Ljumic 8-5 to start the Heels' doubles success. Following in the #2 position, Trystan Meniane and David Cheatwood won easily over Parks/Hoeltschi 8-4. Finishing out the doubles sweep was the #3 team of Max Hilkey and Greg Archer. Hilkey/Archer were down 5-1 to Osorio/Toltsan before coming back to win 8-6. The match was the first action of the 2001 season for Hilkey.
The Heels brought out their usual singles lineup with junior Marcio Petrone filling the #1 position. Petrone defeated Andreas Mardbrink 6-4, 6-2. Petrone realizes the importance of early season experience before the Heels reach the ACC season. "As we practice and play matches, we have to play hard and stay positive when we step on the court," said Petrone. "For me it is a slow process because I usually put a lot of pressure on myself. I will take it slow and be ready to play hard during the ACC season."
Singles success was continued in the #3 position as sophomore Trystan Meniane won a straight set victory 6-4, 6-4 over Martin Parkes. Freshman Nicholas Monroe filled the #4 slot with a solid victory over Steve Hoeltschi 6-2, 6-0. Senior Chad Riley continued his season's success with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Zorick Toltsan. Riley's victory clinched the Heels overall victory as his win secured the Heels' fourth point of the match. The #6 position was filled by Greg Archer who won easily in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 over Paul Gladden.
The Heels now lead Campbell 3-0 in their all time series together. The Heels will match their 2-0 record against Furman next week when the Tar Heels and Paladins meet on February 13. The match will be held in Chapel Hill at 2:00 p.m.
