Men's Tennis Team Loses to Furman 4-3
February 13, 2001 | Men's Tennis
The teams were tied 3-3, with the outcome hinging on the number one singles match between Furman senior Lee Nickell and Carolina junior Marcio Petrone. The players split sets and Petrone broke Nickell's serve in the opening game of the final set. However, Nickell broke right back and the match stayed on serve until the ninth game. Petrone failed to hold serve at 4-5 enabling Nickell to clinch his team's victory 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Furman won two out of three doubles matches to secure the contest's first point. However, the Tar Heels fought back to take a 3-2 lead on the strength of singles victories from David Cheatwood, Nicholas Monroe and Greg Archer. Paladin sophomore Chris Henderson outlasted UNC's Chad Riley 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 to set up the climactic finish at number one singles.
The Tar Heels (2-1) return to action at 12 Noon Saturday against South Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
