UNC Field Hockey Edged By Wake Forest In OT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Second-seeded Wake Forest edged third-seeded North Carolina 3-2 in overtime Friday in an Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Tournament semifinal game. The win put Wake Forest (16-3) in Sunday's championship game against the winner of Friday second semifinal, between Maryland-Virginia matchup.
Sophomore Lucy Shaw scored on Wake's second penalty corner of the sudden-death overtime period to give her team the win. Juniors Heather Aughinbaugh and Maria Whitehead assisted on the play.
"This was a tremendous battle between two fantastic teams," Demon Deacon coach Jennifer Averill said. "I was proud of our kids for capitalizing on the corner in overtime."
The game was scoreless through the first half, when Wake Forest took seven shots on goal to UNC's three. Wake Forest senior Jennie Shelton got her team on the board with a goal less than five minutes into the second half. The Demon Deacons added to the advantage five minutes later, scoring on a penalty corner, when sophomore Kelly Doton's straight shot was deflected up and into the goal off a Tar Heel player. Juniors Heather Aughinbough and Maria Whitehead were credited with assists.
Carolina freshman Kerry Falgowski scored for the Tar Heels with 15:50 left to play, putting back the rebound off a save by Wake Forest goalkeeper Katie Ridd. The Tar Heels tied the game with 5:04 remaining in regulation when senior Abby Martin scored on a penalty corner option, assisted by freshman Carey Fetting-Smith.
Wake Forest has won all three of its overtime contests this season, while North Carolina has lost all three of its extra-period games. WFU has beaten the Tar Heels three times this season.
"This is the third time we've gone to overtime this season and we haven't won yet," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "That's disappointing. The encouraging thing is that I believe the team is improving. We're making progress as a team. I still firmly believe we're one of six, seven or eight teams that could win the national championship."
UNC is now 14-6 on the season and will await word on an NCAA Tournament bid. The field of 16 will be announced on Tuesday.
