UNC Field Hockey Falls At Michigan, 5-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--The fourth-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team fell 5-2 to No. 7 Michigan Saturday to wrap up the 2001 season with a record of 14-7. The loss came in the first round of NCAA Field Hockey Tournament play at the Wolverines' Ocker Field.
The game was scoreless at halftime, but Michigan's April Fronzoni put her team up 2-0 with a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the second half. UNC freshman Kerry Falgowski scored on an assist from junior Stephanie Fuller to pull Carolina within a goal with 20:13 remaining on the clock. The Wolverines then unleashed three goals within an eight-minute span, including a third by Fronzoni, to put the game away. UNC senior Abbey Woolley scored on an assist from classmate Abby Martin with 4:32 remaining to record the final goal.
The win by Michigan was the team's first ever over the Tar Heels. UNC came into the game leading the series 5-0, including a 2-1 win earlier in the season. The Wolverines, now 15-5, will face the winner of this afternoon's game between Michigan State and Kent State on Sunday for a spot in the NCAA semifinals.
