
Carolina Blanks UNC Greensboro, 3-0, In NCAA Tournament Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The top seeded North Carolina Tar Heels earned a 3-0 victory over UNC Greensboro in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday evening at Fetzer Field. Carolina recorded its fifth consecutive shut out while allowing the Spartans only two shots on goal.
The Tar Heels displayed a balanced offensive attack, receiving goals from Anne Remy, Maggie Tomecka and Mary McDowell. Remy opened the scoring for Carolina at 18:18 when she took a cross in the box and slid to one touch the ball into the upper right corner. Carolina made it 2-0 a couple of minutes later when Maggie Tomecka headed a Jordan Walker cross into the upper left corner.
Mary McDowell scored the final goal of the contest when she placed a shot in the upper right corner from just inside the 18 yard box with 10:33 remaining in the match. Carolina controlled play throughout the match and prevented UNC Greensboro from getting a shot in the second half. The Tar Heels move to 20-0 and will face the winner of Thursday night's game between the #23 Tennessee Lady Volunteers and the Duke Blue Devils at 1 p.m. Sunday at Fetzer Field.
