COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team got second half goals by Susan Bush and Anne Remy to stave off a spirited Maryland team 3-1 Friday night before 2,728 fans at Ludwig Field.
The match ended a seven-game, 14-day road trip for the Tar Heels as Carolina swept all seven games to remain unbeaten at 10-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland fell to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Carolina won all seven games on the road trip by at least two goals.
Although it lost to North Carolina for the 21 successive time in 21 tries Maryland did manage to score for the first time ever against the Tar Heels. The margin of victory by Carolina was also only the third time in the history of the series that Maryland had held Carolina to as little as a two-goal margin. UNChad 2-0 wins over Maryland in regular season games at Fetzer Field in both 1994 and 1998.
Alyssa Ramsey started the scoring in the match as she headed in a corner kick by Catherine Reddick at 4:43. The goal was Ramsey's team-leading eighth of the season while the assist was Reddick's fifth of the campaign. Maryland tied the match at 1-1 at the 22:20 mark as Courtney Beirne tip in a ball toward the lower left corner off a double assist by Jen Briscoe and Sara Gustafson. It was Beirne's second goal of the season.
The game remained tied until the 64th minute when the Tar Heels broke through for the game-winner by Susan Bush, her second goal of the year. Bush took a through ball served by Maggie Tomecka and beat Maryland goalkeeper Ali Wolff one-on-one into the lower right corner. Tomecka earned her second assist of the season on the play. Carolina got an insurance goal at 81:41 when Anne Remy scored her third goal of the season with assists by both Bush (her sixth of the season) and Ramsey (also her sixth of the year). Remy took a through ball from Bush and slotted it perfectly down the center for the 3-1 cushion.
The match was a coaching chess match between UNC head coach Anson Dorrance and one of his former players, Shannon Higgins Cirovski, '89. It was the third head-to-head matchup since Higgins Cirovski went to Maryland in 1999.
"Maryland had an excellent game plan," Dorrance said in praise of his former pupil. "When Shannon played for me she was one of the best tactical players I have ever coaches. Her team showed how organized they could be in the game and that is a credit to her and her players."
Carolina will play its first home match since September 9 when the Tar Heels play host to the Florida State Seminoles next Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Maryland will play another ACC match on Wednesday night as the Terps travel to Charlottesville, Va. to play the Virginia Cavaliers.
