CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - What started out as a potential slugfest ended up a pronounced defensive battle as top-ranked North Carolina defeated Wake Forest 1-0 in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon before 1,875 fans at Fetzer Field. The win was the 499th of Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance's brilliant career at UNC, improving his all-time record in 23 years as head coach to 499-22-11.
Carolina scored just 2:49 into the game on a goal by sophomore midfielder Maggie Tomecka. It would prove to be the last goal of the game as well. The play evolved off a corner kick by Catherine Reddick that came near post where it was batted by Wake Forest goalkeeper Erin Regan. The ball went to Anne Remy on the far post to headed it back in the penalty area toward Leslie Gaston. Gaston then headed the ball forward to Tomecka who had an easy put away.
From then on both defenses dominated with UNC outshooting Wake Forest 8-4 in the first half. Regan kept the Tar Heels at bay with five first half saves while Wake Forest's best scoring opportunity of the day came on a shot by Liz McDowell from about 20 yards out which was saved by Kristin DePlatchett.
The second half was dominated by the Tar Heels as they outshot the Deacons 10-1 but were unable to finish their scoring opportunities. Shots by Tomecka and Jordan Walker both his the cross bar in the second half and Regan made four more saves.
DePlatchett finished with her first solo shutout of the season. UNC improves to 12-0 on the season and 4-0 in the ACC. Wake Forest is now 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. oth teams will play Clemson in their next games. The Demon Deacons host the eighth-ranked Tigers Tuesday night at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Clemson then visits Fetzer Field on Thursday for a 5 p.m. match in what will be the first opportunity for the Tar Heels to reward Dorrance with his 500th career win.
