
Women's Tennis Has Second Shutout At Home Against UNC Greensboro

CHAPEL HILL, NC--The University of North Carolina women's tennis team completed their second shutout of their 2001 season defeating the UNC Greensboro Spartans 7-0. The Tar Heels are 18-0 in singles and doubles play for this season.
Carolina's singles were victorious in straight sets. Kate Pinchbeck led the Tar Heels with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1. Kendrick Bunn, who is ranked 54th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Lindsey Peel 6-1, 6-3.
Other singles successes include Caroline Hill's 6-1, 6-1 defeat over Ashley Rimel. At No. 4 Kristin Koenig defeated Carlin Kannan of UNC Greensboro 6-1, 6-4. Elina Bairos didn't drop a game in her win over Amanda Eutzler 6-0, 6-0. No. 6 Courtney Zalinski completed the sweep with her 6-2, 6-0 win.
Carolina doubles only dropped four games in their three matches. Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck, who are ranked 25th by the ITA, shut out the Spartans 8-0 at the No. 1 spot. The team of Erin Niebling/Bairos won 8-3 and Hill/Zalinski won 8-1.
Head Coach Roland Thornqvist was pleased with their doubles improvement. "We played well. The team was able to dictate play all night and play our strengths to their weaknesses. I am particularly happy to see improved doubles play after all the hard work that has been put in."
The Tar Heels are now 2-0 for the season and will host No. 32 ranked Kentucky on Sunday at 1 p.m.
