Tar Heel Wresters Are 0-2 At Virginia Duals

The University of North Carolina wrestling team lost its first two matches on the opening day of competition at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Tar Heels dropped a close match to Cal-State Bakersfield 18-17 and fell in their opening round match to Kent State 25-9.
Mike Booth (141 lbs.) and Corey Bell (174 lbs.) each scored major decisions for the Tar Heels against Cal-State Bakersfield. Booth defeated Zhon Kuraspediani by a 11-3 margin, while Bell beat Chris Carlino 15-6. Brad Byers (133 lbs.), JohnMark Bentley (149 lbs.) and Nick Richmond (184 lbs.) each won their matches by decision but it was not enough as the Tar Heels dropped the match by one point.
The Tar Heels opened the tournament losing 25-9 to Kent State. Carolina's JohnMark Bentley (149 lbs.) decisioned Mike Tolar 9-7 , and Corey Bell (174 lbs.) took a 6-3 victory over Jack Hageman. Chris DiGuiseppe (157 lbs.) was also successful against the Golden Flashes, defeating Steve Bittinger 8-5.
Carolina opens Atlantic Coast Conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 16, facing NC State in Raleigh.
