UNC Explodes in Second Half to Rout Cavaliers

Sept. 1, 2000
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's top-ranked women's soccer team had gone since September 19, 1997 outshooting every one of its opponents. Until Friday night that is.
Sixteenth-ranked Virginia equalled North Carolina's shot total with 15 Friday night but the Tar Heels' amazing finishing ability proved to be the difference as UNC posted a 6-1 victory for its 21st win in a row over the past two seasons. A crowd of 3,629 fans at Fetzer Field viewed the Tar Heels' 2000 home opener as Carolina employed six different goal scorers and won going away, tallying three goals in the game's final 12 minutes. UNC (3-0, ACC 1-0) has now outscored its opponents by a 16-2 margin in the second half so far this season.
Carolina was led by dynamic freshman forward Alyssa Ramsey (Cornelius, N.C.), who had a goal and three assists for the Tar Heels. Ramsey assisted on Carolina's first goal of the match and then she had assists on back-to-back goals that upped a 2-1 Carolina lead to 4-1 with 11:06 to play. Ramsey then scored the Tar Heels' fifth goal herself. UNC sophomore goalkeeper Jenni Branam (Placentia, Calif.) was also brilliant for the Tar Heels as she made a career high seven saves in 85 minutes of play.
UNC jumped out on top in the match in the game's first 10 minutes as sophomore midfielder Leslie Gaston scored in the box at the 9:32 mark. Senior defender Kalli Kamholz started the scoring play with a long throw in that Ramsey flicked on with her head to an open Gaston.
Just 3:35 into the second half, Carolina increased its lead to 2-0 on the first goal of the year by junior midfielder Anne Remy. Junior midfielder Jena Kluegel started the scoring play by feeding sophomore forward Susan Bush just inside the penalty area. Bush dribbled toward the end line and then slotted the ball perfectly across the crease to an onrushing Remy, who had an easy put away.
Carolina did not keep the two-goal margin for long. A foul just outside the penalty area set up a direct kick for Virginia and midfielder Lori Lindsey beat Branam into the upper left corner to cut the Tar Heel lead to 2-1.
Just over six minutes after the Virginia goal, Carolina started its game-ending barrage. Senior forward Meredith Florance scored on a breakaway for the Tar Heels at 60:21, assisted by Ramsey. At 78:54, Ramsey fed a long ball from the left side into the box that bounced off Virginia goalkeeper Jodu Clugston. The ball fell at the feet of Bush, who easily put away the shot. Less than two minutes after Bush's goal, Ramsey stripped a Cavalier defender and scored into the left side of the net from 18 yards out with a rocket launched off her left foot.
The Tar Heels finished off the scoring with 2:55 to play as sophomore forward Kim Patrick lofted a ball over the head Clugston from about 30 yards away. Clugston was off her line and Patrick's shot ricocheted in off the left post. Remy was credited with an assist on the play.,
oth teams finished with 15 shots. The last time Carolina had failed to outshoot an opponent was September 19, 1997 when both Notre Dame and UNC had 11 shots in a 2-2 tie at South Bend, Ind.
The Tar Heels will be back in action again on Sunday when they play host to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field.
