CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's 19th-ranked men's tennis team extended its dual match winning streak to 10 Saturday afternoon and remained undefeated in Atlantic Coast Conference play as the Tar Heels defeated 54th-ranked Georgia Tech 6-1 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
With the victory, Coach Sam Paul's Tar Heels improved to 13-2 overall on the season and to 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech, which came into Saturday's match having won eight of its last 10 encounters, fell to 10-9 overall and to 4-2 in the ACC. The Yellow Jacket's only other ACC loss was at Duke on March 8, 7-0. North Carolina has not lost since it was beaten by eighth-ranked Texas A&M 5-2 in Chapel Hill on February 18.
Carolina earned the doubles point to start the match by sweeping all three double matches in the pro set format. Greg Archer and Assaf Drori at #1 doubles and Marcio Petrone and Tyne Brownlow at #3 doubles won close decisions to give the Tar Heels the point.
UNC then went on to win the top five slots in singles with the only Georgia Tech point coming at #6 where Romain Coirault topped UNC's Chad Riley 7-5 in the third set of a very competitive match. UNC seniors Tripp Phillips and Assaf Drori both won easily in straight sets at #1 and #2 singles and junior David Cheatwood did the same at the #3 spot.
Carolina sophomore Marcio Petrone won a tough three-set battle at #4 singles and freshman Trystan Meniane was leading 7-5, 3-2 at #5 when his opponent retired.
Carolina will put its ever burgeoning winning streak on the line again as the Tar Heels play host to 35th-ranked Clemson on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets play at Wake Forest on Sunday at 1 p.m.
