CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's men's tennis team swept all six singles matches Sunday afternoon to defeat Clemson 6-1 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, giving the Tar Heels their 11th successive dual match win of the season. The #19 Tar Heels improved to 14-2 overall on the season and 5-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The #35 Tigers lost their third match in a row and fell below the .500 mark at 14-15. Clemson is now 4-3 in the ACC.
After losing the doubles point to the Tigers, UNC rebounded to sweep the singles, winning four of the six matches in three sets. Three of the four three-set wins came after Tar Heel players lost the first set. At #1 singles, 41st-ranked Tripp Phillips of UNC rallied past 37th-rated Josh Goffi of Clemson, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. UNC senior Assaf Drori, like Phillips playing his last regular season match at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center, upset 48th-ranked Tomasz Boniecki 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles. Carolina sophomore Marcio Petrone had the other UNC straight set win at #4 singles as he beat Luis Garcia, 7-5, 6-0.
Both junior David Cheatwood at #3 singles and freshman Trystan Meniane at #5 singles rallied from one-set deficits to claim singles wins over the Tigers. Cheatwood beat Brad Emendorfer, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Meniane downed Sandon Barth, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Finally, at #6 singles, Carolina junior Chad Riley won a third-set tiebreaker 8-6 to prove victorious over the Tigers' Lee Porter, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6.
The Tar Heels will now embark on a three-match road trip to end the regular season, playing at ACC foes Duke, Virginia and Maryland. The road trip begins Wednesday when the Tar Heels play the fifth-ranked Duke Blue Devils in Durham, N.C. at 2:30 p.m.
