UNC Softball Opens Tournament With Pair Of Wins

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team opened its Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday with pair of wins, 3-1 over Virginia and 7-0 over Florida International, to improve to 35-13 on the season. In the day's opening game, Radford topped Florida International, 4-3. The fourth game of the day, Virginia vs. Radford, was postponed until Sunday due to heavy rain that arrived in the seventh inning of the UNC-Florida International game.
In Game 1 of the Tar Heel Invitational, Radford junior Stacie Morioka led her team with two triples and 2 RBI. Sophomore Ashleigh Brooks also tripled and freshman Deana Benner struck out three in earning the win. FIU pitcher Auburn Sigurdson struck out 11 and gave up eight hits in the loss.
In Game 2, the Tar Heels topped Virginia for the third time in the past week. Senior second baseman Crystal Henderson batted 4-for-4 with a triple and scored two runs for Carolina. Designated player Carrie Bates led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to give UNC a 2-0 lead. Junior Radara McHugh struck out five to earn the win, her 16th of the season. Virginia pitcher Stacey Zagol struck out four and walked four.
In Game 3, catcher Natalie Anter doubled twice and Kelly Ramsey went 2-for-2 with a triple for the Tar Heels. Freshman Michael Parrott struck out seven to earn her 10th win of the season. The anticipated rain arrived in the top of the seventh and brought an end to the game with one out and one UNC runner on base.
Sunday's schedule at Finley Field will open with the postponed Virginia-Radford game at 10 a.m. Florida International and Virginia will meet at noon and UNC will play Radford at 2 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. The consolation game, originally set for 2 p.m., will not be played.
