CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson had four goals and an assist and Amy Havrilla scored twice and had two assists as the No. 6-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Ohio State, 13-4, Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium. Betsy Gaines, Erin McInnes and Christine McPike each had two goals for UNC as well. The game marked the final regular season home appearances for Carolina seniors Julie Kickham, Gray MacNair, Merridith Meade, Meghann Mohler, Krisin Off and Jennie Voishan and redshirt junior Meghan Stringer.
With the win, Carolina improves to 9-4 on the year entering next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in College Park, Md. The Tar Heels, who earned the ACC's top seed in the tournament by winning the conference regular-season championship, will play fourth-seeded Duke on Saturday afternoon. Ohio State falls to 8-5 with the loss.
Carolina got off to a quick, 4-0, lead in the first eight minutes of action. Mohler scored unassisted less than a minute into the game. McInnes, Thompson and Gaines followed with goals for a 4-0 lead. After Lauren Cochran scored for Ohio State to cut it to 4-1, UNC respsonded with three more goals by Havrilla, Gaines and Thompson for a 7-1 edge. The Buckeyes scored with 0:10 left in the opening half to make it a 7-2 Carolina advantage at the break. The Tar Heels outshot the Buckeyes, 14-3, in the first half.
In the second half, Thompson scored at 25:48 to make it 8-2 UNC. Shannon Wilson and Tracey Bounds scored for OSU to cut the lead to 8-4 before the Tar Heels scored the last five goals of the day for the 13-4 final margin.
In the game, Carolina outshot the Buckeyes, 31-12.
