
Men's Tennis Upset by Virginia, 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The 43rd-ranked University of Virginia men's tennis team upset 16th-ranked North Carolina 6-1 Saturday afternoon, April 15 at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville. With the win, UVa improves to 15-7 overall and 5-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels are now 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. The Tar Heels can still stake claim to the #2 seed in the ACC Tournament which begins next Thursday in Norcross, Ga. if UNC beats Maryland and Duke defeats Virginia on Sunday.
Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The Cavaliers then won five of six singles matches for the 6-1 triumph.
In doubles action, Brian Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery, currently ranked 23rd, won at #1 doubles 8-4 over the Tar Heel's Greg Archer and Assaf Drori. At #2 doubles, the tandem of John Winter and Tommy Croker defeated David Cheatwood and Tripp Phillips 8-5. In the #3 doubles match, Carolina's Tyne Brownlow and Marcio Petrone registered a 9-8 win over Michael Duquette and third-year Brian Hunter.
In singles play, the Cavaliers posted straight-set victories in the #1, #2 and #3 matches. Vahaly, ranked fifth in the nation, defeated No. 30 Tripp Phillips 6-1, 6-3. At the #2 spot, No. 51 Montgomery won 6-4, 6-2 over North Carolina's Assaf Drori. Winter posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Cheatwood at #3 singles. At #4, Croker notched a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win against Petrone, while Hunter won 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 at #5 singles over Trystan Meniane. The lone UVa singles loss came at #6 as Duquette dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 decision to Chad Riley.
Carolina will conclude its regular season on Sunday with a match at Maryland at 11 a.m.
