
Tar Heel Tennis Team Whips Maryland In Regular-Season Finale

COLLEGE PARK, MD. -- The #16-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team ended a two-game losing streak with a 6-0 win over the University of Maryland to complete its regular-season play. The Tar Heels finished the season with an overall record of 15-4 and a 6-2 record in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
Carolina swept all six singles matches, four of them being won in straight sets. Tripp Phillips defeated Maryland's Larry Chou at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Assaf Drori dropped a set at #2 singles to Chris Chiu, but rallied to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. David Cheatwood beat Luan Nguyen 6-1, 6-0 at #3 singles, and Marcio Petrone defeated Peter Harjes 6-2, 6-0 at #4 singles. North Carolina freshman Greg Archer defeated Dan Kenshalo 6-1, 6-1 at #5 singles and Chad Riley won by default over Maryland's Jon Murchison.
North Carolina clinched the match during singles action, so no doubles matches were played.
The Tar Heels will begin competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament on Thursday, April 20, in Atlanta, Ga. The Heels will be seeded either second or third, depending on the outcome of the Duke/Virginia match on April 16.
