CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team opened the 2000 outdoor season with a 5-2 win over Davidson on Wednesday, March 2. The Tar Heels took four singles matches and all three doubles matches to win the match. Carolina improves to 5-2 in dual-match play with the win over the Wildcats.
In singles action, senior Tripp Phillips won at #1 singles, defeating Brett Ialacci, 6-2, 6-0. Trystan Meniane won at #4 singles over Billy Boykin (6-2, 6-1) and Chad Riley defeated Davidson's Chad Winebarger at #5 singles (7-5, 6-3). Carolina freshman Greg Archer won at #6 singles, defeating Chad Phillips, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, Carolina won all three matches. Phillips and Marcio Petrone won at #1, defeating Ialacci and Alex Okulski, 9-8 (2). Tyne Brownlow and David Cheatwood combined to defeat Boykin and Whit Hansen at #2 doubles, 9-7. At #3 doubles, Archer and Assaf Drori defeated Winebarger and David Webb, 8-2.
The Tar Heels will host UNC Charlotte in a 2:30 p.m. match Wednesday, March 8, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
