HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior Julie Martinez scored four goals to lead seventh-ranked James Madison (1-0) to a 13-5 win over fifth-ranked North Carolina (0-1) in women's lacrosse Tuesday afternoon.
Martinez scored three goals in the first half and the opening goal of the second half as JMU sprinted to an 11-2 lead with 29:22 left to play. The Tar Heels then tallied three straight goals to close the gap to 11-5 with 8:41 left but could get no closer. Senior Jess Marion added three goals and sophomore Kristen Dinisio had two goals for JMU.
Carolina was led by senior Kristen Off and sophomore Lindsay Stone, each with two goals. Senior Meghann Mohler also scored for the Tar Heels. Freshman Betsy Gaines, sophomore Kellie Thompson and sophomore Christine McPike tallied assists for UNC.
JMU goalkeeper Jennifer Corradini made 10 saves. Freshman Margaret Garofalo started in goal for Carolina and made four saves. Sophomore Melissa Coyne played the second half and recorded one save.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday at 5:00 pm when they host Johns Hopkins in Chapel Hill.
