UNC Coach Elmar Bolowich
"I would like to congratulate Indiana on a terrific effort on our
field. They proved to be the team that we expected them to be,
battle-proven and tough on the road.
"It would be a moot point right now, and a discredit to that team, to say that they were lucky to get out of here with the win. Although the shot total was 18 to 8, they created their own luck. For them to keep us scoreless, that's just a fantastic feat, because no other team has done it all season long.
"I'm proud of my team, the way we played, they way we held them in check. We did create numerous opportunities, particularly towards the end. We showed great character and great fight, it's just what you want your team to do.
"I'm sorry that it didn't work out for the seniors to extend the season. To go to the Final Four next week would have been nice, but it wasn't meant to be.
"We take the loss and we move on and prepare for another season to come."
Did you feel like you would get a goal late in the game?
"Absolutely, I was convinced we would score. I thought we would pull this
game out. The chances we created were legitimate chances.
"Their keeper threw himself in, their players threw themselves into the balls that were ready to be shot. They do a good job at that. They're the masters at that. They're composed, they don't panic. On some occasions we did panic on our shots."
Did you think coming into the game it might be a 1-0 game?
"Yes, it was clear to me the way they were playing. They were dropping players
behind the ball. They weren't interested in opening up and playing an entertaining
match at this point in the season. They were looking for the result.
"They also knew we would be a tough team to play, and they were looking for the one or two opportunities where we wouldn't be paying attention, or would be unbalanced. In the end they got that, and they made the most of it. I give them credit for that."
Would you comment on the discrepancy in the number of fouls (IU 24, UNC 10)?
"They are a savvy team. They disrupt the flow of play, because they know when we get
in our rhythm we're a hard team to stop.
"One way to disrupt a team's play is to foul early. Not a yellow-card foul, just a little push here, a little tug there, where the ref has to call it, but the flow of the game stops.
"The first half they did a wonderful job of that, because they never allowed us to get into the flow of the game."
Indiana Coach Jerry Yeagley:
"First of all, I'd like to congratulate North Carolina for a tremendous year and an excellent team.
I know (the loss) has to be difficult for them. They certainly were a bit unlucky today in the end.
On the other hand, I'm very proud of our team because I don't think anybody gave the Hoosiers much
of a chance at the start of the season after we dropped our first two games and when we got into the
tournament and saw the brackets.
"The NCAA committee has given us some great trips, but I think 11 of the last 20 days we've been on the road. And it takes a lot for a team to win under those circumstances.
"I thought they sent their basketball team out on the last 20 minutes. They kept getting bigger and bigger, and we didn't have any answers to their size. When they play direct up to their big guys, you've just got to hang on. And that's what we did."
