CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team beat Campbell twice on Wednesday afternoon, 4-2 in the first game and 6-0 in the second. The Tar Heels are now 27-15 overall and have swept their last five double-headers. Campbell is 10-23 overall.
Freshman catcher Natalie Anter had all four Carolina RBIs in the first game, two on a first-inning double and two on a third-inning home run. (The homer was Anter's fifth of the season and UNC's 17th, equaling the team's total for all of last year.) Campbell scored on an error in the top of the first and on senior Jessica Pleasants' triple in the third.
The Tar Heels had 12 hits in the second game, with two each by senior Megan Smith, junior Crystal Henderson and sophomores Beth Olen and Michelle Semmes. (Olen contributed a triple and Semmes a double.) Freshman pitcher Sarah Young earned her second win*and second complete-game shutout*of the season for Carolina. She gave up just two hits, thanks in part to the defense of her teammates.
"Our defense was awesome," UNC coach Donna Papa said. "Just about every person in the infield and outfield made at least one outstanding play. That's what it takes to win games.
"We did some good things offensively, too. It seems like we put everything together today. Hopefully this will be a good tune-up for the weekend."
Carolina hosts ACC rival Virginia for single games on Saturday and Sunday, both at Finley Field. Saturday's game is at 1 p.m. and Sunday's is at 2 p.m.
