CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina improved to 28-15 on the softball field Saturday with a 4-2 win over visiting Virginia. UNC has won 18 of its last 21 games and seven straight at home.
The Tar Heels scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Crystal Henderson led off the game with a triple and stole home. Senior Colleen Lefferts and sophomore Michelle Semmes, both of whom reached on singles, scored on a two-RBI single by freshman catcher Natalie Anter. Anter earned her third RBI of the game with a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the sixth. Anter's homer was her sixth of the season and the team's 18th, one more than the Tar Heels hit all of last season.
Virginia scored both of its runs in the top of the second. Junior Jen Krill reached first on a walk, then was replaced by pinch runner Claudia Hickey. The next batter, junior Amy Peay, reached on a single to left. After senior Julie Amaon struck out, senior catcher Mariruth Graham doubled to score Hickey and Peay.
Sophomore pitcher Radara McHugh (19-10) earned the win for UNC, giving up eight hits and striking out four. Junior Stacey Zagol, who yielded seven hits and struck out two, took the loss for Virginia.
UNC (28-15, 1-0 ACC) and Virginia (17-20, 0-3 ACC) will face off in another single game on Sunday. Game time is at 2 p.m. at Finley Field.
