WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The seventh-ranked Georgetown University women's lacrosse team earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory by defeating ninth-ranked North Carolina 7-6 on Wednesday, May 5, at Kehoe Field. The Hoyas scored the final two goals of the game for the come-from-behind win in the First Round of the NCCA Tournament. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 11-5 on the season and advance to play top-seeded and undefeated Maryland on Saturday, May 8, in College Park, Md. The Tar Heels finish the season with an 8-7 record.
North Carolina took a 6-5 lead with 15:16 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Meghann Mohler (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville). The Hoyas responded less than a minute later on freshman attack Erin Elbe's (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) second goal of the contest which tied the game at 6-6. Sphomore All-American attack Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) assisted on the goal. Stanwick then scored the game-winning goal just 1:09 later at the 13:10 mark. It marked the Hoyas' first lead since 2-1 at the 20:43 mark of the first period.
Georgetown, the seventh seed in the tournament, jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior attack Jordan Keating (Garden City, N.J./Garden City) found the back of the net just 1:49 into the contest. North Carolina knotted the game at 1-1 when junior midfielder Gray Mercian (Chevy Chase, Md./Episcopal) converted a feed from senior attack Erin McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) at the 24:27 mark. With 20:43 left in the first half, Stanwick scored on a free position shot to give GU a 2-1 advantage.
