Women's Tennis Ends Regular Season with 7-2 Loss

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Cavaliers defeated an injury-laden North Carolina squad 7-2 in women's tennis at the Cone-Kenfield tennis center Sunday. The match was the last home match and last regular season match of the season for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina was down 3-0 before the match even started. With Jeni Burnette, Cena Hackler and Courtney Zalinski out with injuries, first year head coach Rowland Thornqvist was forced to forfeit matches for the Tar Heels at #5 and #6 singles and #3 doubles.
Virginia's Stacy Gingold defeated Tar Heel freshman Caroline Hill 6-4, 6-1 at #2 singles. Amy O'Donnell and Leslie Cook sealed Virginia's win with victories over Sarah Hawkins and Emi Shaffer at #3 and #4. Carolina's only singles victory came at #1 from junior Jessica Zaganczyk, who beat Virginia's Paige Boiko 6-3, 6-2.
The Heels and the Cavaliers split the two doubles matches played. Virginia's #1 doubles team of Paige Boiko and Stacy Gingold netted a win over Sarah Hawkins and Caroline Hill 8-3, while UNC's #2 duo of Emi Shaffer and Jessica Zaganczyk beat Leslie Cook and Christie Schweer 8-6,
The loss moves the 25th ranked Tar Heels to 13-8 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. The 46th-ranked Cavaliers boost their record to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. The next match for North Carolina will be in the ACC Championship Friday, April 23-Sunday, April 25 in Atlanta. Ga.
