CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Gymnastics team defeated #21 Auburn University 193.450 - 192.375 at Carmichael Auditorium Friday night. The Heels score set a school record, breaking the previous team total record of 193.375 set in 1996.
The Heels swept the top three places on the uneven bars, setting a new school record total of 49.125 on the event. Julie Pasqualini, Brooke Wilson and Jennifer DeLuca tied for first place on bars, each scoring a 9.875.
Carolina sophomore Brooke Wilson continued her all-around dominance claiming her fifth all-around title in as many tries with a new school record score of 39.175. Wilson claimed first on floor (9.800), first on beam (9.750), first on bars (9.875) and first on vault (9.750).
The Tar Heels took the top two places on the beam with junior Erica Roberts and Wilson tying for first place with a score of 9.750. Carolina also swept the vault with senior Jennifer DeLuca trying Wilson for first and freshman Monica Middleton finishing second.
Middleton claimed second in the all around with a season high 38.625 total. Auburn junior Sarah Wentworth rounded out the top three with a 38.550.
Other Tar Heel notables were Lisa Companioni with a 9.750 on the floor and Jodi Meadows with a personal best 9.675 on the bars.
Auburn was led by Sarah Wentworth who scored a 9.850 on the bars. Teammate Sally Cantrell was not far behind in the all-around with a 38.375.
The Tar Heels stay home this Friday to face William & Mary at 7:00 p.m. The meet will be held in Carmichael Auditorium and admission is free.
