Women's Tennis Drops Tough Match to Tennessee

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's tennis team narrowly missed beating a Top 25 team for the second time in three days Sunday. The 26th -ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team won three of six singles matches, and went on to defeat the 54th-ranked University of North Carolina women's team 5-4 in an indoor match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the UNC campus.
The Volunteer women clinched the match at #3 doubles when Agnes Wiski and Dana Noel triumphed over UNC's Cena Hawkins and Jeni Burneette 8-6.
Coach Roland Thornqvist's Tar Heels fell to 3-2 with the loss. The Heels got singles victories from junior Jessica Zaganczyk at #1, junior Cena Hackler at #5 and junior Jeni Burnette at #6, the latter win in three sets.
The match marks the 18th time the two teams have met in dual competition. The record now rests with Carolina winning 11 of those meetings, and Tennessee, seven.
Carolina's next match will be March 6, 1999 against the 62-ranked University of Illinois in Champaign. The match will start the outdoor season for the Tar Heels.
