Women's Tennis Defeats Wolverines, 5-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 27rh ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team rallied from adversity to defeat the Michigan Wolverines 5-4 at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center Monday. The five and a half-hour match marked the ninth win in 13 matches for first year coach Rowland Thornqvist.
Carolina's #3 doubles team of Sarah Hawkins and Caroline Hill clinched the match for the Tar Heels with a 9-7 victory over Michigan's Szandra Fuzesi and Alison Sinclair. Hawkins held Michigan's serve to put the match back on serve in the 11th game, which went into six deuces. UNC then broke Michigan's serve in the next game to square the match at 6-6. The Tar Heel duo then went on to clinch the match by winning five of the last games.
Jessica Zaganzyck and Cena Hackler won seven of the last eight games to earn an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles over Michigan's Brooke Hart and Jennifer Vaughn. Michigan won at #2 doubles with a score of 8-5.
In singles play, Alison Sinclair defeated injured Tar Heel Jeni Burnette 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at #6. Burnette injured her ankle while ahead 4-2 in the third set, but continued to finish the match. She was unable to play her usual position at #2 doubles.
In other singles play, Jessica Zaganzyck, Cena Hackler and Courtney Zalinski earned wins in straight sets for the Tar Heels at numbers #4 and #5 respectively. Michigan's Brooke Hart and Szandra Fuzesi defeated Caroline Hill and Sarah Hawkins in three sets at number #2 and #3.
Tar Heel Head Coach Rowland Thornqvist said he was extremely proud of his team's effort.
"Today, not only did we defeat them, we out played them. We rallied and rose to the occasion. The team responded to Jeni's injury with a big rally where they played harder than we have ever played in doubles before. We are a talented team. We were pushed hard today, and we responded very well."
The win moves the Heels to a 12-6 record, while Michigan falls to 4-11. The Tar Heels return to ACC action Wednesday, when the travel to Raleigh for a 2 p.m. match against #64 N.C. State.
