
Softball Sweeps Doubleheader from Elon

ELON COLLEGE, NC - Senior outfielder Jen Klesaris went 3-for-6, including a home run, to lead the North Carolina softball team to a doubleheader sweep at Elon College Tuesday afternoon. The Tar Heels recorded victories by scores of 9-3 and 5-0 to improve their overall record to 32-18, while the Fightin' Christians drop to 10-24.
In the opener, UNC scored seven runs in the third inning, in turning a 2-0 deficit into a five-run lead. Elon jumped out to 2-0 advantage in the first inning when Kelly Lloyd hit a two-run homer to centerfield, scoring Jen Warren. For Lloyd, it was her second round-tripper of the season. In the third, the Tar Heels sent 10 batters to the plate, including the first seven who reached safely.
Elon cut the lead by one in the fifth on Whitney Godfrey's RBI groundout with the bases loaded, scoring Holly Briel make the score 7-3. UNC responded with a run in the sixth inning Klesaris scored one of four runs on the day, when she was driven in on Colleen Lefferts' RBI single. The Tar Heels added another run in the seventh with Michelle Semmes' run-scoring single.
UNC's Radara McHugh improved her record to 21-12 going the distance, allowing six hits and three runs. She walked five and struck out four. Elon hurler Gina Krueger droped her mark to 4-8, allowing nine runs (five earned), walking three and striking out five in the loss.
In game two, UNC used the long-ball and the solid pitching performance of Erin Joseph to shut out the Fightin' Christians 5-0. Joseph (9-6) scattered five hits, walked none and fanned seven Elon batters.
The Tar Heels led 2-0 following solo home runs by Klesaris and freshman Natalie Anter in the second and fourth innings respectively. Anter's was her team-leading seventh of the season. Joseph retired 11 batters in a row to end the game, while North Carolina plated three more runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Freshman catcher Kelly Ramsey went 2-for-4 for UNC, while Holly Briel recorded three hits on the day for the Fightin' Christians.
Carolina is in action again on Friday when the Tar Heels host South Florida for a doubleheader. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
