BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Fueled by three comeback wins in singles, the 53rd-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team equaled its win total of the entire 1998 season on Sunday when it upset 37th-ranked Indiana 7-2 at Bloomington, Ind.
The win was Carolina's second in a row and it improved the Tar Heels' mark to 5-2. That equals the total number of wins Carolina had during the entirety of the 1998 campaign when the Heels finished with a 5-17 mark.
Sunday's triumphed was fueled by a troika of comeback victories in singles. Senior Sarah Hawkins at #2 singles, freshman Caroline Hill at #3 singles and junior Cena Hackler at #5 singles all lost the first set of their matches but all three rallied to win the final two sets in close matches. At #4 singles, sophomore Courtney Zalinski captured a triebreaker in the first set and went on to win easily in the second set.
North Carolina head coach Roland Thornqvist was extremely pleased with the victory. "Just as we did yesterday at Illinois we hung tough and we came through in the close matches. Indiana was in a position where they could have won four of the singles matches but our girls persevered and we ended up winning all the close matches. Now we have to get ready for the second half of our spring break trip in Texas.
Indiana fell to 5-5 overall with the loss to Carolina. The Hoosiers have lost four matches in a row. UNC will continue its spring break trip by flying to Houston where the Tar Heels will play #51 Rice on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and #36 Houston on Friday at 2 p.m.
