North Carolina Drops Heartbreaker to Penn State

BALTIMORE, Md. - Penn State senior attacker Jen Johnson scored her fourth goal of the game with 6:56 to play in the second half to lift the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions to a 7-6 victory over sixth-ranked North Carolina in women's lacrosse action. The match was played at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md.
With the victory Penn State improved to 12-4 on the season while the Tar Heels saw a three-game winning streak stopped, falling to 7-5.
Johnson led the Penn State attack and she was aided by attacker Julie Tice who had one goal and four assists and midfielder Emily Mechem, who scored twice.
Attacker Erin McGinnis and midfielder Kellie Thompson each scored twice for the Tar Heels who were held to only one goal in the final 45:39 of the game by the Penn State defense.
North Carolina returns home to play host to the third annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament this weekend in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels will play host to #1-ranked Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first semifinal game of the tournament at Henry Stadium.
