UNC Coach Anson Dorrance: (on Clemson's bunker defense) In response to their bunker, we played a 3-3-4 and in a 3-3-4 you have almost no players in the back. We took a calculated risk to create more chances for ourselves, and in turn it gives them more chances. By taking the risk to score goals we're also giving up the opportunity to prevent them. I think in the first half, Clemson had more chances than they usually have, but we had many more chances than we had in the first half the first time we played them and we played our regular3-4-3.
It was a calculated risk, but I felt that our defense could weather the storm.
UNC player Lorrie Fair: We weren't really focused in the first half. We were a little disorganized.
UNC player Jena Kluegel: (on making the Final Four) I'm excited. We knew it was going to be tough but we made it. I couldn't be happier.
Clemson Coach Tracey Leone: We came out a bit different in how we played. It was an intense game for both sides. You could feel that this game had more meaning, being a step below the Final Four. It was a good game. Exciting.
(on UNC's 2 goals before half) It was on 2 free kicks. The first one was taken fairly quick and we weren't really organized. 2 goals in a short amount of time is deflating. We were playing them pretty well, getting some opportunities ourselves, and then to have 2 quick ones go in, it hurt.
Clemson player Alison Burpee: (on the 2 UNC goals before half) It's a hard way to go out. The momentum is obviously in their favor when they score 2 goals in 2 minutes.
They are a quality team. Man for man they have no weak links. Man for man, they're hard to beat. But the gap (between UNC and other women's soccer program's) is definitely being made up for. We couldn't do it today, but I think that we will do it eventually.
