Cricket Lane serves as UNC's Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. She has been working with student-athletes for over 30 years and was one of the first to specialize in life skills on the collegiate level.
Lane started at UNC in August 2003 as Director of Student-Athlete Development, where she started UNC’s Life Skills Program, and has risen to the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development.
In her time, she has expanded the enrichment programs to include all current and any former student-athletes interested in career services, community service, and wellness. She is a facilitator in the Carolina Leadership Academy for first-year student-athletes and has sport supervision of the rowing and fencing programs at UNC.
Lane has been recognized for excellence on several occasions. In 2012, she won the Ernie Williamson Award for displaying an unquestioned love and loyalty for the university, the athletics department and the student-athletes, an inspirational work ethic, an encouraging demeanor and the respect and admiration of co-workers.
In 2022, Lane was selected for membership in the Order of the Golden Fleece, the oldest honorary society at UNC. Selection to the order is based on personal commitment to excellence in enhancing life at the university and elsewhere. In 2023, she was presented the Nell Jackson Nike Executive of the Year Award. This award is presented annually by the Women Leaders in Sports to a senior-level executive who demonstrates a commitment to the pursuit of excellence, serves as a positive role model and demonstrates a commitment to diversity and gender equity.

Before becoming a Tar Heel, Lane spent four years working in student-athlete development at Saint Francis University, first as the director of student-athlete development and then as assistant director of athletics for student-athlete development. She also served as the university's director of multicultural affairs and taught in the sociology department. Prior to her arrival at Saint Francis, Lane served in a similar capacity in the department of athletics at the University of Detroit Mercy. She has also worked as a therapist in private practice and taught graduate courses at Detroit Mercy and Wayne State University.
Lane holds a bachelors of science in psychology from George Mason University, a masters of art in counseling from the University of Detroit and her doctor of philosophy in counselor education from Wayne State University.
Lane served on the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and the NCAA Life Skills Advisory Committee. She has served as a facilitator for the Women’s Leaders in College Sports Women’s Leadership Symposium and NCAA National and Regional Leadership Conferences. She has presented and co-presented with other educators on various leadership and student well-being issues at national and regional levels.
