Dr. Michelle Brown serves as an Assistant Provost and the Director the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes. She joined the University in May of 2013.
As Assistant Provost and Director of the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes (ASPSA), Brown provides comprehensive leadership in both strategic planning and direct program management. She partners with various university leaders and campus departments to align ASPSA’s efforts with UNC’s overall academic mission.
Brown oversees key ASPSA programs such as academic advising and tutoring tailored to student-athlete and leads a dedicated team that provides personalized support and fosters academic excellence. She collaborates with faculty, coaches and staff to create a coordinated approach to student-athlete support, while ensuring that all initiatives follow university and NCAA compliance standards.
Brown brings over thirty years of experience in working with students as part of several academic initiatives. Her portfolio at the university level includes working with student-athletes on their academic pursuits, advising for first-year students, and teaching in the classroom.
She came to Chapel Hill from Florida Atlantic University, where she most recently served as associate athletic director for academics and student services and director of the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence. Initially, she headed the academics for the football program and later assumed the director role. She first began working with student-athletes in her role as the assistant director of campus-wide advising and academic support services for first-year students.
Brown is a former student-athlete, and moving over to the Student-Athlete Center for Academic Excellence offered her the opportunity to use her varied skill set to support other student-athletes as they strove to achieve balance with their academic and athletic goals.
Brown earned her bachelor's degree in international studies and French with magna cum laude honors in 1992 at West Virginia University, where she was an all-conference volleyball player. Between her sophomore and junior years, she earned a certificate in French at the Université de Paris, Sorbonne. While pursuing her Master's degree in French and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), she received a second certificate in French from the Université du Quebéc à Chicoutimi. She continued her graduate studies in curriculum and instruction at West Virginia University, eventually, completing her Ed. D. in educational leadership: higher education administration at Florida Atlantic in 2002.
