Football
Brian Hess was named head strength and conditioning coach for the North Carolina football program on Jan. 2, 2019. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, Hess came to UNC after spending three years at Army (2015-18), two of which were as the head football strength and conditioning coach.
Prior to his time at West Point, Hess spent two seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach at Sam Houston State (2013-15). He worked with six different teams with the Bearkats - football, volleyball, women's basketball, tennis, bowling and the throwers of the track and field squad.
Before his time at SHSU, Hess led the strength and conditioning efforts at Delaware from 2011-13, when he was responsible for more than 575 student-athletes representing the Blue Hens’ 21 sport programs.
Hess earned his first full-time position at Harvard, where he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach from 2009-11. While at Harvard, he worked as the second assistant for football and directed efforts for the track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming, Nordic skiing, men’s and women’s water polo, fencing, and women’s tennis teams.
Prior to his time at Harvard, Hess spent one season as an intern at Georgetown (2008-09) working with Augie Maurelli. His duties included the football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, crew, and women’s lacrosse programs. He also designed and led strength and conditioning programs for the field hockey and sailing teams.
Hess began his coaching career as an intern at the University of Iowa under head strength and conditioning coach Chris Doyle in 2008.
A native of Kingston, Mass., Hess earned his degree in applied exercise science from Springfield (Mass.) College in 2008. After beginning his college career at Trinity College, he moved on to Springfield and was a two-year starter at linebacker for the football team, serving as team captain in 2007. In 2006, Hess helped lead the team to a 10-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III football playoffs.
