The 2026-27 season is Eric Hoots’ 23rd as a member of the Carolina men’s basketball staff. He is the director of basketball operations and an assistant to the athletic director. Hoots is working for his fourth head coach, as he served as a team manager for Matt Doherty and Roy Williams. Over the last 22 seasons, Hoots has managed basketball operations on Williams’ and Hubert Davis’ staffs.
Hoots has played a key behind-the-scenes role in the 2005, 2009 and 2017 national championship seasons. He’s been part of three other Final Four teams in 2008, 2016 and 2022, 10 ACC regular-season championships, three ACC Tournament titles and nine No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
Hoots is the primary contact for former Tar Heel players and is the program’s academic coordinator. As the contact with the Student Academic Support office, he is responsible for monitoring the players’ academic progress. Hoots coordinates team travel and equipment, including managing the budget, ordering apparel and serving as a liaison between Nike/Jordan and the basketball staff.
A 2004 UNC graduate with a degree in communications, Hoots was a three-year Tar Heel varsity manager. He served as head manager as a senior in Williams’ first season at Carolina in 2003-04. Hoots earned his master’s degree in sport administration from VCU in 2010.
Hoots, a Newton, N.C., native, and his wife, Amy, have two sons, Brady and Jackson, and a daughter, Avery.
