Jorge Sanz joins the Tar Heel coaching staff after eight seasons on Hall-of-Famer Mark Few’s coaching staff at Gonzaga, including the past three seasons as assistant coach and director of operations.
In his eight seasons in Spokane, the Bulldogs went 238-38, winning 86.2% of their games. They went 117-12 in the West Coast Conference, won six regular-season and six WCC Tournament championships. Gonzaga was a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament three times, played in the 2021 national championship game vs. Baylor and advanced to two other regional finals and two Sweet 16s.
Through his relationships around the world, Sanz has led recruiting of 17 players from nine countries. His expertise in applying analytics and advanced metrics optimizes individual and team performance through enhanced strategies, scouting and player development.
During Sanz’ tenure, Gonzaga produced numerous NBA players, including six first-round draft picks, led by Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Other first-round picks included Jalen Suggs (No. 5 overall in 2021), Rui Hachimura (No. 9 in 2019), Corey Kispert (No. 15 in 2021), Brandon Clarke (No. 21 in 2019) and Julian Strawther (No. 29 in 2023). Andrew Nembhard was also selected with the first pick in the second round in 2022 and Anton Watson was picked in the second round in 2024. Drew Timme, Gonzaga’s all-time leading scorer has also played in the NBA.
Holmgren finished second in the NBA Rookie-of-the-Year voting in 2024 and was a key figure in Oklahoma City winning the NBA championship in 2025.
A native of Zaragoza, Spain, Sanz holds the Entrenador Superior certification, the highest coaching qualification in Spanish basketball. He has served as an assistant coach/defensive coordinator for various Spanish national youth teams since 2018, helping guide the U17 squad to a silver medal in the 2022 FIBA World Cup and the U18 team to second place in the 2023 European Championships.
Pronounced HOR-hey sahnth, he is an alumnus of Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla., where he served on the Owls’ coaching staff for eight seasons prior to joining Gonzaga in 2018.
Sanz began his career as video coordinator in 2010 at his alma mater where he helped the Owls win the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title and earn the program’s first appearance in the NIT. He was director of operations from 2011-14 and assistant coach from 2016-18.
Sanz attended McKeesport High School in Pennsylvania for his final year of high school. He was graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in business management from FAU in 2011 and earned a master’s in sport and athletic administration at Gonzaga in 2025.
Sanz and his wife, Franchesca, have two two daughters, Luna and Laia.
