Deon Thompson begins his first season as Carolina’s director of player personnel. He started at power forward for the 2009 NCAA champions and set the NCAA record for most games played in a four-year career.
He totaled 1,414 points (9.3), 743 rebounds (4.9) and 141 blocks in 152 games from 2006-10. The Torrance, Calif., native scored in double figures 68 times, including 20 or more points eight times. He had a career-high 23 points vs. Nevada on 11/29/2009 and 13 rebounds (with 19 points) against Notre Dame in the 2008 Maui Invitational championship game.
He never missed a game and made 113 starts in his four seasons as a Tar Heel. Carolina went 121-31 in his career.
Carolina won the 2007 and 2008 ACC Championships, 2008 and 2009 NCAA regionals and defeated Michigan State in Detroit to win the 2009 national championship. He scored all nine of his points vs. the Spartans in the first half as the Tar Heels built a 21-point lead.
Thompson played internationally for 22 teams in 16 countries until retiring from professional basketball in 2026. He played in Greece, Slovenia, Germany, China, Israel, Turkey, Serbia, Spain, Lithuania, Puerto Rico, Mexico, South Korea, Japan, The Philippines, The Basketball African League (Libya) and Indonesia.
He was a four-time All-Star (Slovenia and Greece and twice in Germany) and was MVP of the All-Star Game in Slovenia. He was a member of teams that won the Slovenia, German and Serbia Cups and league championships in Germany, Israel, Serbia, the Adriatic League and Lithuania.
Thompson played five years in the Euroleague, the highest level of European basketball, and represented the Ivory Coast National Team in the 2019 Basketball World Cup and 2024 Summer Olympic qualifiers.
Thompson is working on his master’s at the Kenan-Flagler Business School.
