Lucas: Duke Rapid Reactions
March 7, 2026 | Men's Basketball, Featured Writers, Adam Lucas
Quick takeaways from the rematch.
By Adam Lucas
1. Duke was terrific in the second half on the way to a 76-61 win over Carolina.
2. Not much mystery about the key stat in that game: Duke piled up 24 points off turnovers, a season high by a UNC opponent.
3. The Devils put the game away with a 16-0 run midway through the second half. Included in that stretch were three Duke three-pointers as they heated up from the perimeter in the second half. It eventually turned into a 24-2 run that lasted almost half of the second half. Duke made six three-pointers in the second half.
4. The Heels had the ball and the chance to take the lead when they trailed 41-40 with 18:30 remaining. But they missed a three-pointer, and over the next 11 minutes Duke outscored the visitors 28-6. During that span, UNC went over ten minutes without a basket in the halfcourt.
5. It was a great senior day for Duke's Maliq Brown, who seems to always play well against Carolina. He was instrumental in Duke's defensive effort, with five steals. He also added 15 points and nine rebounds. Cameron Boozer is a great player (26 points and 15 rebounds), but Brown might have been the most impactful Blue Devil in terms of setting the tone of the game. He also frequently impeded the ability of Henri Veesaar to get involved in the offense. Veesaar attempted just one field goal in the second half.
6. One very bad stretch in the first half put Carolina in a hole. The Heels went through an 11-possession sequence midway through the first half in which they made just one field goal and committed four turnovers. That allowed Duke to build a double-digit lead and also resulted in the Devils owning a 12-2 edge in points off turnovers at the break. For the game, that category was 24-4.
7. While Duke was creating havoc defensively, the Tar Heels were not able to do the same. Duke had just eight turnovers, and they led to only four UNC points. The difference was illustrated by a play with about four minutes left when Carolina got a Duke turnover, but promptly turned it right back over on a transition chance.
8. Caleb Wilson's offense is obviously missed. But Carolina also misses him on the glass. They came into the game out-rebounding opponents by just one per game without him, but Duke owned a 42-29 rebounding edge. That included a whopping 18 offensive rebounds that led to Duke attempting 16 more field goals than Carolina and 11 more free throws. It's very tough to win the game that way. Duke missed 40 shots and rebounded almost half of them. They built that entire advantage in the second half, as the rebounding totals in the final 20 minutes were 24 for Duke and 10 for Carolina. The Heels had the same number of offensive rebounds as Wanda in the second half.
9. The Heels actually didn't shoot that badly, finishing at 45.3 percent for the game and 37.5 percent from three. But just the inability to get an equivalent number of shots to the rim was too much to overcome.
10. Not a lot of standouts for Carolina, but Derek Dixon again acquitted himself well in a tough environment. The freshman led the team in scoring with a career-high 17 points and made five three-pointers. And on a day the ball was slippery for Carolina, Dixon played 32 minutes without a turnover. If the Heels are going to make a push in the postseason, they will need steady play from Dixon.
11. Carolina finishes the regular season 24-7 and 12-6. The Heels' most likely opponent in Charlotte in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals will be Clemson. No matter who the foe, that game will take place around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evening.
