Swimming & Diving Produce Successful Fridays

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina swimmers finished off the UNC Invitational on Friday, while the divers opened competition at the VT Diving Invite. David Melnychuk turned in a top performance for the swimmers and Rodolfo Vazquez Montano won the 1-meter.
Melnychuk won a tight race in the 200 backstroke with a personal-best 1:42.12. He not only dipped under the NCAA standard, but he moved to No. 8 all-time at UNC in the event. Emma Karam turned in a season-best 1:52.83 to win the 200 back and post another NCAA standard. Newcomer Tiffany Murillo had another nice night with a 16:25.87 in the 1650 freestyle.
Vazquez Montano used a 351.45 to outdistance the field and blow pass the NCAA standard in the event. Sofia Knight placed second in the 3-meter after qualifying third in the prelims.
The swimmers will now look to sharpen themselves as they prepare for the ACC Championships, while the divers will continue competition in Virginia over the next two days.
