WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—Freshman Lachlan Gaskell won a pair of matches on Saturday to advance in the singles draw of the Wake Forest Invitational at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Gaskell defeated UNCW's Alex Degabriele in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, in his opening match on Saturday in his singles flight. He then moved passed Duke's Jakub Smejcky by injury default.
Teammate Will Mayew won his first match on Saturday, topping South Carolina's Antonin Witz in straight sets, before falling to Wake Forest's Alexander Cornelius Shalmi in three sets in his second outing of the day.
Tar Heel junior Nick Mangiapane lost his opening match on Saturday, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to Carlos Victor Ferreira Gonzalez of ETSU.
The Wake Forest Invitational will conclude on Sunday.
