Men's Tennis Starts Strong At Carolina Classic

Members of the University of North Carolina men's tennis team picked up three singles wins as they completed the first day of action of their Fall season on Friday at the Carolina Classic. The University of South Carolina hosted the event on its campus.
Freshman Ian Mayew won his first two college matches, beating Iliyas Maratuly of South Carolina State in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. On Saturday, Mayew will meet Clement Lemire of Central Florida and Cody Benton of NC State in scheduled singles matches.
Meanwhile fellow freshmen Oliver Narbut and Kase Schinnerer both lost their initial singles on Friday, while sophomore Nick Mangiapane split a pair of matches, including picking up a win over Bastian Zamora of South Carolina State in three sets.
Singles action will continue from Columbia on Saturday, and doubles action will commence. Other members of the Tar Heel team will be in action starting Saturday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
