Shelby Barbee Walks Off NC State On Senior Day, 5-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina softball (35-15, 12-9) walked off NC State (23-25, 5-16) by a score of 5-4 to take the series on senior day courtesy of a Shelby Barbee home run.
Barbee's home run was her third multi-hit game of the season. The nation's RBI leader, Kat Rodriguez opened up the game with a single up the middle to score the speedy duo of Alex Coleman and Grace Jackson.
NC State responded with a grand slam the next inning. Carolina began to chip away at the lead the as Coleman worked an RBI walk in the third inning which scored Skylar Young who came in to pinch run for Carlie Myrtle.
The Tar Heels tied up the ball game in the bottom of the fourth Kiannah Pierce brought Sanna Thompson home on a fielder's choice. Thompson exhibited stellar baserunning IQ as she never stopped running from second on a grounder to second and came all the way around to tie things up.
Kenna Ray Dark pitched two scoreless innings to bring the Tar Heels up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, which marked her 12th complete game of the season. The junior struck out seven in a dominating performance to take the series.
Barbee stepped up to the plate to lead off the inning and sent a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right center as confetti erupted in the stands to send everyone home happy.
