
Men’s Swimming Qualifies Nine For NCAA Championships

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's swimming team will send nine qualifiers along with four relay alternates to the NCAA Championships March 26-29 in Federal Way, Wash. The nine NCAA individual qualifiers are the most for the men's program since at least 1996. Sebastian Lunak, Patrick Hussey, Ben Delmar, Louis Dramm, PJ Foy, Boyd Poelke, Walker Davis, Xavier Ruiz and Colin Whelehan earned invitations in individual events, while Martin Kartavi, David Quaresma, JT Schmid and Mathhew Van Deusen will travel as relay alternates.
Lunak secured a bronze medal at the ACC Championships in the 200 fly with a school-record time (1:40.12) that ranks ninth nationally. He'll also compete in the 100 fly and 200 IM, events in which he ranks third all-time at UNC. Lunak will be a relay option for the staff as well and was part of the 800 free relay school record.
Hussey will cap his outstanding collegiate career at the NCAA Championships after qualifying 12th in the 200 free. His mark of 1:31.68 is one of the six school records he's been a part of. Hussey will also swim the 200 fly and 500 free along with the relays. He's been a part of four relay school records, the 200, 400 and 800 free relays and the 400 medley relay.
Delmar qualified in the 200 and 100 breaststroke, ranking 13th and 20th in the country respectively. He is the school record holder in both events. Delmar will also swim the 200 IM, where he's eighth on UNC's all-time list, and the relays. He's swum the breaststroke leg on both school-record holding 200 and 400 medley relays.
Dramm earned qualification to the national meet in the 200 IM (No. 20). He is the school record holder in the 200 IM and will also swim the 400 IM, where he ranks second on UNC's all-time list. In addition, Dramm will compete in the 200 fly and the relays. He is part of school records in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays along with the 200 medley relay.
Foy booked his trip to Federal Way by ranking 20th nationally in the 100 fly. His mark of 44.91 is the school record. Foy will also compete in the 50 free, 100 free and the relays. He ranks second all-time at UNC in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. Foy is also a member of three school-record holding relays, the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and the 400 medley relay.
Poelke claimed his spot at nationals by ranking 22nd in the 100 fly. His mark of 44.94 puts him at No. 2 all-time at UNC. Poelke will also swim the 200 fly, 50 free and relays. He ranks fifth all-time at UNC in the 200 fly and sixth in the 50 free. Poelke is also a member of the school-record team in the 200 medley relay.
Davis qualified in the 100 back after being ranked 26th with a time of 45.24, which is the school record. He'll also compete in the 50 freestyle and the relays. Davis has swum the backstroke for the school-record setting 200 and 400 medley relays.
Ruiz secured his spot in the meet with the 27th-ranked time (1:52.74) in the 200 breast. That mark moved him to No. 2 on UNC's all-time list. He'll also compete in the 100 breast, where he ranks No. 3 all-time on the school's list.
Whelehan dropped his personal best in the 200 fly to 1:41.45, which put him 29th nationally and No. 2 on UNC's all-time list. He'll also compete in the 200 IM and 100 fly, where he ranks No. 2 and No. 8, respectively, on the school's chart.
