February 6, 2025 | Swimming & Diving
Chapel Hill, N.C. – The No. 14 UNC men's and No. 15 women's swimming teams kicked off action at the UNC Invitational on Thursday. The Tar Heels set two pool records, posted six program Top 10s and tallied 26 personal bests on the day. Sophomore Ben Delmar starred on Thursday with a pool record in the 200 individual medley (1:43.95), while helping the 400-medley relay to a pool record (3:05.43).
The 400-medley relay finished off a night of action which saw the Tar Heels break N.C. State's previous mark of 3:07.27, set in 2023. Sophomore Sophia Frei cooked in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 1:53.10, which ranks fourth all-time in the event at Carolina. Sophomore Colin Whelehan posted a 46.29 to win the 100-yard butterfly. His time moved him into eight all-time at UNC. The time moved Delmar into fourth all-time on Carolina's Top 10 list and was an NCAA 'B' cut. Newcomer Martin Kartavi posted a 19.41 in the 50 freestyle, which was the program's third-fastest time ever and an NCAA 'B' cut.
