Vázquez Montaño Three-Peats On 1-Meter To Highlight Day 1 Of ACCs

Chapel Hill, N.C. – University of North Carolina diver Aranza Vázquez Montaño completed a three-peat in the 1-meter dive to kickoff the ACC Championships on Tuesday in Greensboro. Vázquez Montaño made a late charge and scored a 69 on her final dive to move into first and win her third consecutive ACC title in the event.
Vázquez Montaño trailed Miami's Mia Vallee through four rounds, but she closed with two huge scores to overtake the Hurricane diver. In round five, Vázquez Montaño used a reverse 1 ½ somersault with 1 ½ twists to score 65 points. She entered the final round trailing Valle by 6.30 points, needing at least a 60.9 in the final round to take the lead. Vázquez Montaño nailed a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, producing the 69 that would give her the lead and her eighth ACC title overall.
The Tar Heels produced two school records on the day. The 200-medley relay of Walker Davis, Ben Delmar, Boyd Poelke and Louis Dramm set a new mark of 1:23.20, nipping the previous mark by .06 seconds. Davis split 20.75 in the backstroke to get things going followed by Delmar, who split 23.63 in the breast. Poelke was next with a 20.13 on the butterfly leg and Dramm closed in 18.69. The new school record was also an NCAA A cut.
Patrick Hussey led the 800 freestyle relay, besting his previous 200 freestyle school record. Hussey went out in 1:32.31 to better his old mark of 1:32.87. Dramm (1:33.81), David Quaresma (1:34.07) and Matthew Van Deusen (1:35.20) helped the Heels post a 6:15.39, which is an NCAA A Cut.
The women's 200-medley relay of Greer Pattison, Skyler Smith, Elizabeth Sowards and Georgia Nel posted an NCAA A cut of 1:35.48. Pattison notched a 23.82 in the backstroke followed by a race-best 26.14 from Smith in the breaststroke leg. Sowards clocked a 23.51 on the fly and Nel came home in 22.01.
The Tar Heel women finished day one in first place with 187 points, while the men sit in third with 139.
