Perfection At Anderson: Britton Rogers Throws Second Career Perfect Game, Tar Heels Sweep Doubleheader
February 13, 2025 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 2025 Carolina softball home slate got off to a perfect start this afternoon thanks to Britton Rogers. The senior became the second pitcher in UNC history to throw multiple perfect games with her dominating eight strikeout performance in an 8-0 five inning win over Drexel.
Anyone watching at home or in Anderson Softball Stadium had the feeling early that it could be a special day after Rogers first inning where she looked unstoppable. The bottom of the first was equally dominating when the Tar Heels sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs.
Just like the first, Rogers picked up two strikeouts and got our of the inning spotless.
Every perfect game requires at least one insane play by the defense… This was no different as Shelby Barbee came through big time in the third inning to keep perfection alive. In the third she'd give her pitcher a bigger cousin with an RBI single to make it 5-0.
Barbee once again had her name called in the fourth, getting two of the outs before Rogers closed things out with a backwards K.
Kat Rodriguez came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, she smacked a single down the left field line to make it a 6-0 ball game. Sanaa Thompson followed that up with a two RBI double, putting the Tar Heels up 8-0.
The game ended how the game started: a Britton Rogers strikeout. She had all of her pitches working and was rewarded with the 10th perfect game in program history.
Game two got started about an hour later and despite Drexel scoring the games first run, the Tar Heel bats would start going crazy.
Rodriguez picked up an RBI double to knot things up.
The second inning is where things got hectic. After picking up two quick outs, the Carolina bats went to work. After a single and a walk, Alex Coleman brought home a run to make it 2-1. An error
brought home another run, Rodriguez sent two more home, Thompson sent Rodriguez home, then the passing the bat continued with Myrtle bringing in Thompson. Shelby Barbee worked a walk to set up two on, two out for Rayna Blackwell, who hit one to right center field that bounced off the top of the wall and over the fence for her team-leading third homer of the season. The very next batter, Lilly Parrish sent a ball to dead center field that might still be in the air, making it a 10-run inning.
This was the first inning with 10 runs or more since Feb. 27, 2024 when the Tar Heels put up 12 in the fourth inning against NC Central.
The third inning saw nine Tar Heels step to the plate and score four runs on five hits. Erin Parker picked up her first career hit in the inning to plate one of the runs.
In the fourth, Jayden Howell sent her first career hit down the left field line to drive in the 16th run of the game. Nikki Harris would shut things down in the fifth to close out the 16-1 win.
In the last 24 hours, UNC softball has scored 40 runs across three games to improve to 6-2 on the young season. They return to action tomorrow at 3 and 5:30 PM against Princeton and George Mason.
