Illinois Stops Men's Tennis, 4-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Illinois fell behind early but won four of five singles matches and beat North Carolina, 4-2, in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Carolina won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, then allowed the Illini to win the singles matchups at the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 positions in the lineup.
The Illini's Kenta Miyoshi won the clinching match at No. 1 singles, edging Constantinos Djakouris, 7-6, 7-6.
The Tar Heel duo of Vladislav Melnic and Chris Xu picked up a win at No. 1 doubles to start the afternoon, 6-3. After the Illini topped Djakouris and Nick Mangiapane at No. 3, 6-2, Carolina's Diego Jarry and Anthony Wright topped Tyler Bowers and Zach Viiala, 6-4, to clinch the doubles points.
Xu posted Carolina's lone singles win of the day, topping Jeremy Zhang by a 6-4, 6-1 score at No. 3.
The Tar Heels played without sophomore Patrick Schoen in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive match.
With the win, Illinois improved to 2-2 this season. Carolina fell to 2-2.
The Tar Heels will return to action with a home doubleheader on Tuesday against Campbell and North Carolina Central.
