On Learning to Play Through Physicality
"One of the things that I've said to them over and over again is that there's no way, there's no route, there's no road [to team success] other than being able to be tough on both ends of the floor. We've identified that. We've got to be physical and tough enough, even on the offensive end, to be able to set screens, come off screens, the patients, to be able to take the bump, be able to score, get to the free throw line, knock down free throws, make the extra pass. The last four games, in regards to St. Bonaventure and Michigan State and Kentucky and now Georgetown, they're very physical teams. I think it's great for us to learn lessons on what's going to allow us to be successful. When I say there's no road, no route, no other way, in order for us to be successful, we've got to be a great defensive team and a great rebounding team. You can't do that without being physical."
On the Offense and Its Breakout...
"I like it. But, from an offensive standpoint, we're inside-out. I've been clear, definitive. I want to dominate points in the paint, post penetration, offensive rebounding, live in the paint, live at the free throw line, put max pressure on the rim. I believe when you do that, that generates the open threes. And I felt like we generated really good threes. Even in the first half, I thought we had some good looks, we just didn't knock them down. But really, I'm really looking forward to the day where we're dominating points in the paint and we're hot from three-point range."
On Caleb Wilson's Performance...
"Well, I think one of the things that I would say opposing teams are learning is one of the things that he's elite at is passing the basketball. He can find guys, and so actually, when they put two on the ball, he becomes a playmaker. He's really instinctive, and he knows where his teammates are, and gets the ball to where it needs to be. But, as teams continue to build more people around him, just learning when to be aggressive, when to get the ball back out, we'll get it right back into you. I remember in the second half, I said, 'Look, you don't have to force it. Just throw it back out. We'll throw it right back into you, because we love the ball in his hands.' He makes great decisions."
On Caleb Wilson And What He Brings To The Team...
"I don't think you can have a better five-star player, five-star person and a five-star teammate than Caleb. It may be out there, but there's nobody better than him, and it's not just a blessing to be able to coach him. It is a gift. And I tell you one thing, in practice, he did something in practice, and everyone stopped, and I got on the team, I said, act like you've been there before. I was like, Guys, everybody does this. Everyone's done you know, we've seen that play before, and everyone looked at me, and then I said, guys, it's the first time that I've lied to you. I've never seen that."
Georgetown Head Coach Ed Cooley
On UNC's performance…
"Well, you've gotta give UNC a lot of credit. I thought they played incredibly well, thought they shared the ball. I thought their length definitely impacted the game. At the rim between Caleb [Wilson] and [Henri Veesaar] though, [Derek] Dixon did a really good job coming in, gave him a lot of energy. I thought their threes really bothered us. But I think overall, the overall message to the team was our offensive discipline was an F minus, and our shot selection led to an incredible offensive opportunity for UNC."
UNC Forward Caleb Wilson
On Georgetown not having a run at the end of the game…
"Just living in a one shot per possession, just making sure we rebound the ball well and also just putting together stops and kills. That's what I felt like ended the game well for us. We took good and quick shots."
On not forcing shots…
"I just try not to force stuff. Honestly, that's just what it's gonna be now. So just play the game. Find who's open, tell my teammates to get in a position where I can see them, and just let it happen. I have to be able to see what's going on around me. It's something I had to get used to, especially going against people that are bigger."
On trusting each other and handling physical teams…
"We just learn to trust each other more and also just play the right way, play the way that benefits each other. I definitely feel like I'm better…and as a team, I think so too, just not letting people push our offense out and staying close to the three point line, as close as we can be, and just making sure we finish the contest. For me, I just play the play and play through it honestly. It'll be physical, and being tall and not 250 pounds, playing through contact… and also just knowing that off the ball, I'm still the focus, so I just can't give up position when I don't have it."
UNC Guard Derek Dixon
On the team's three-point shooting and extending the lead…
"I thought that was really big for us in opening the game up. Just really wanted to focus defensively. We got stops and we were able to get out in transition and get those buckets. So I thought that was really big for us."
On playing better defense in the second half…
"I think just our energy and our communication was a lot better. Trying to limit their [points in the paint]. I think Coach said they had 22 in the first half and only 10 in the second half, limited their transition looks.
On growing as a team…
"We're really good when we lock in on being good on the defensive end, our offense follows. We've got a really good group, lot of growing we've done since then. I think the Michigan State loss was good for us. We were able to grow a lot from that, and I feel like we've been a lot better since then."
On the impact Henri Veesaar makes…
"He's a versatile big, so he can pick and pop, he can short roll and make the right decisions. So all that, I think, is really good. One thing I think he's really improved on is being more physical with the screens and setting them and, you know, getting contact, and that's been able to get us open."
UNC Guard Luka Bogavac
On his comfort with the pick-and-roll game…
"I try every single game to get more and more comfortable, to try to find my rhythm with this team…the pick and roll game is one of the things that I feel most comfortable [with]."
On how this game is preparing them for conference play…
"Our goal is just to learn from every single game to be more efficient [on] both ends of the floor, and so this is what we try to do every single night."
UNC Center Henri Veesaar
On the game as a whole…
"We played good. I think they were a very physical team, and I think it was a little bit bothering us. I think in the second half, we did a good job of taking care of the basketball and just making certain plays and kind of keep getting it into pounding it into pounding it into pain, how we did in first half, and I think that led us to success at end."
On the improvement of Derek Dixon…
"He's improved a lot throughout the season, like just seeing him every day get better every game play better than he played the last game. So I think that's huge for us, being able to come in and kind of control the game and just make the passes or make the plays he makes, and just be like, strong with the ball, be a good defender. Like, just doing that is the utmost importance for all of us, just being able to make those plays."
What the team has learned since the Navy game…
"I feel like just not letting the foot off the gas, kind of I feel like, in the Navy game, we went up and then played very loosely. Got to turn over the ball. We gave [Navy] a little offensive rebounds. I feel like in this game, we did a good job of keeping our foot on the gas and just not ever giving them the chance to get the come back. Just keep increasing the lead. Keep increasing the league play-by-play. Get a stop. Score. Get a stop. Score."
