Big First Day For Men's Tennis At ITA Sectional
November 6, 2025 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Tar Heel men's tennis players won three singles matches and three doubles matches as they got off to a great start in Thursday's first day of action at the ITA East Sectional at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Freshman Ian Mayew picked up a big, ranked win, coming from behind and topping Clemson's 25th-ranked Noa Vukadin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 as Tar Heels won three of four singles matches to start the afternoon's action.
Roan Jones and Niels Ratiu also played well and joined Mayew in Friday's singles round of 16. Jones, who earned an NCAA Singles Championship berth last fall while playing at the University of Alabama, is seeking his second consecutive NCAA trip. He eased by Liberty's Ben Sparks, 6-2, 6-1 on Thursday for Carolina's first singles victory of the day. Ratiu beat Rodrigo Santiago Arraez of Liberty in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Tar Heel senior Constantinos Djakouris dropped his singles match to Penn's #117 Manfredi Graziani, 6-1, 6-1.
Continuing the strong start to the weekend, UNC doubles teams won all three of their matches on Thursday. Carolina's sophomore duo of Anthony Wright and Nick Mangiapane beat Boston College's Lukas Rais and Mai Gao to march into Friday's doubles quarterfinal round. Shortly thereafter, Jones and Logan Zapp joined them in the quarters with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alexx Degabriele and Jordi Domech of UNCW, 6-4, 6-4.
To finish the afternoon, the freshman team of Mayew and Kase Schinnerer beat NC State's Charlie Camus and William Manning in a marathon, 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) match.
The ITA Sectional Championships are the last chance for some of the top players in the country to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Individual Championships.
Each 2025 ITA Sectional Championship will have a draw size of 32 players in singles and 16 doubles teams. From this, six singles players from each section (24 nationally) will qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship (semifinalists and two quarterfinal playoff winners from each sectional).
Meanwhile, three doubles teams from each section (12 total) will qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship through the Sectional Championships (champion, finalist, third place).
